Management Information Systems (MIS) is the application of information technology to support business decision making activities. Because businesses are rapidly changing, there is a growing demand for graduates who have the analytical skills and business background to make business processes more productive.
One has to analyze an organization’s information needs, design a computer-based delivery system to meet these needs, and finally direct the implementation and operation of the system.
To develop information systems that fill users’ needs, MIS professionals must understand organizational structures, business objectives, and business operations (including processes and the flow of data between processes), how to communicate effectively with users, and how to design systems that support their activities. MIS professionals must also stay up-to-date with evolving information technologies and have a solid foundation of technical skills to select appropriate technologies and to implement computer-based information systems.
Since the failure of most computer-based Management information systems is not technical in nature but arises from the inability of individuals to design and use the systems properly. Generally the reports designed are static in nature, and error in anticipating the needs of the user makes the report non-beneficial.
New technologies help in addressing such issues, It has been observed that tools like 1KEY provide dynamic reports. This power of changing the reports, by the business user reduces the impact of errors occurred at the time of planning of MIS.
