That’s what many business people look at to gauge the profitability of a company. While important, the bottom line doesn’t always provide the entire picture, and using it as the sole barometer of company performance could have serious fiscal repercussions.

This discussion provides some simple profitability ratios and analytical procedures that can help determine your company’s present and future financial standing. With your findings, you can identify company trends and compare current figures to your business’s historical performance. Once this essential data is in hand, you will be able to evaluate your business in relation to your competition and industry norms.
This is why BI technology helps build up profitability analytics solution. The BI technology solution is so advanced it provides the largest enterprises with accurate net profitability for each transaction, order, SKU, product, customer, customer segment and supplier. This precision and accuracy is key to the use of Profit Analytics in strategic and operational decisions.

Many customers have changed their sales compensation plans to be based on net profit dollars generated, rather than revenue. Their reason? They wanted to focus on increasing their profit dollars. For the first time, they had the accuracy they needed to confidently base compensation on the sales executives’ profitability.

BI accurate and timely reporting of Profitability Analytics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) makes it possible for executives to make strategic and operational decisions with confidence.
By Sanjay Mehta

The event was the biggest ever launch technically and commercially planned and done by MAIA Intelligence. We at MAIA Intelligence have been working hard for this day to release 1KEY Agile BI Suite launch. We have released 15 modules of various presentation layers and utilities in this edition of 1KEY. Aptly name 1KEY Agile as in today’s world agility is the key to an enterprise success. We added the tag line BI Suite as this first ever end to end compilation of presentation layers for data visualization on single layer and which was again interoperable at data source level hence a suite of BI product bundled to gather as 1KEY Agile BI Suite.

1KEY AGILE BI SUITE - modules

We are proud that the complete product was ground up conceived and developed in-house. Historically peer group of other big names in BI are either acquired or product companies which are merged hence none of the modules are on single layer nor interoperable. Let me state an example for the same; let’s assume we have to define role based hierarchical access to data you will have to do it individually for each of their modules where in 1KEY BI it works on single level definitions. Similarly in other BI product meta data methods to access data sources differs for each module hence for representing the same data on multiple presentation layer modules you need to work for each of the modules where as in MAIA it is single source for meta data methods to access data sources for all the presentation layers within 1KEY Agile BI Suite.

We created and launched the www.mis-champions.com website for the event. The event was scheduled at Renaissance, Powai and our expectation was of CXO level around 75 attendances hence we had booked the ballroom for the same. We did a unique personalization of event invite where in the CXO name was written on time magazine cover page as MIS champion Year 2008 and back side was also a personal invitation. We received positive response for the innovative invitation as CXO community loved to see their name on Time Magazine front cover page.

Personalized Invitations being sent across to CIOs for the event

We had interaction with CIO community and they always were in discussion of making an independent CIO forum. We discussed the same on launching this CIO forum using the same platform of 1KEY Agile BI Suite Launch. They decided to name this forum as CIO KLUB and founder were Ashish Chauhan (Group CIO, Reliance Industries), Anwer Bagdadi(VP , CFC International), Prakash Pawar (CTO, Intrex Ltd.), Radhakrishna Pillai(CIO, SRL Ranbaxy) , Satish Pendse (CIO, HCC), Shirish Gariba (CIO, ELbee) , Vikas Gadre (CIO,TATA Chemicals), Vilas Pujari (GM Corporate IT, ACG World Wide), Zoeb Adenwala (CIO, Essel Propack). This was big coup MAIA could pull off as our relationship with CIO community has always been very strong and personalized. We helped them design and put up www.cioklub.in website. Suddenly with this one new agenda getting added in the 1KEY Agile BI Suite MIS Champions event the success was now very much a shared responsibility of the CIO themselves as now this was their own event.

CIO KLUB logo unveiled by founder members at the venue

There were few challenges again there 3 things which were deterrent 1.) IBM had a CIO event being held at Goa for Lotus notes on same dates. 2.) Being an auspicious day and vacation season, there were lots of marriages event happening on that day. 3.) Renaissance Hotel Location Powai Suburb- which has the best possible lake view on Mumbai city but had a travel time of 2 hour if coming from town. The event was turning out to be the talk of the town and within the CXO community. Still we received fantastic response and over 300+ physical confirmation and event attendee registration. We worked hard and hand in hand with CIO KLUB members to ensure the event gets best and important CIO level gathering. Due to this overwhelming response we move the event from ball room to open terrace view, with round table sitting for 150 attendees. We got 167 participant in the event from who is who of CIO community and full force of media houses press correspondents of IT publication.

The event progressed very well with Ashwin Dedhia, Director Solution at MAIA hosted the evening. Event had begun with a great Audio Visual-AV on innovation and MAIA Intelligence vision. My self Sanjay Mehta CEO MAIA Intelligence did the brief keynote address by unveiling and launching 1KEY Agile BI Suite. Vikram Kole – Head followed successfully the act by a product demonstration taking the participants through the benefits and advantages of each. All attendees really loved the show which I could see it on their face and attention which they were giving to Vikram speech. There was shine and hope on their face when they experience each presentation layer especially cube, dashboard, ticker and KPI. It gave all the attendees an essence that there was more to MIS than spreadsheet and now MAIA is the company which understands that. Next was an AV of our customer testimonials Reliance Capital Mr. Kishan Dagha Vice President for research work in Madhusudhan Kela team. He gave the benefits and usage of 1KEY Agile BI in research on equity side and how 1KEY is working integrated with Interwoven worksite. Similarly for Elbee Express, Tata Chemicals, SRL Ranbaxy.

Then came up the most interesting section where in Ashwin was taking interview of customers and prospective ones with incisive question which delighted the attendees. Finally the CIO KULB launch happened with Ashish Chauhan lighting the lamp and opening the website www.cioklub.in. Shirish Gariba then took the attendees through the objectives and further revealing the governing body and committees. All CIO were enthralled and eager to join the club and volunteer for activities. The night was looking great with open sky, slow breeze flowing, attendees enjoying their drinks overlooking was the complete city lighted up and its reflection on the lake. 25th April was the land mark day and for every one who attended the event was memorable with fantastic take away on BI and CIO KLUB.

The goal of a classification tree is to sequentially partition the data to maximize the differences in the dependent variable. It is often referred to as a decision tree. The true purpose of a classification tree is to classify the data into distinct groups or branches that create the strongest separation in the values of the dependent variable.

Classification trees are very good at identifying segments with a desired behavior such as response or activation. This identification can be quite useful when a company is trying to understand what is driving market behavior. It also has an advantage over regression in its ability to detect nonlinear relationships. Classification trees are “grown” through a series of steps and rules that offer great flexibility. In Figure, the tree differentiates between responders and non responders. The top node represents the performance of the overall campaign. Sales pieces were mailed to 10,000 names and yielded a response rate of 2.6%. The first split is on gender. This implies that the greatest difference between responders and non responders is gender. We see that males are much more responsive (3.2%) than females (2.1%).

If we stop after one split, we would consider males the better target group. Our goal, though, is to find groups within both genders that discriminate between responders and non responders. In the next split, these two groups or nodes are considered separately. The second-level split from the male node is on income. This implies that income level varies the most between responders and non responders among the males. For females, the greatest difference is among age groups. It is very easy to identify the groups with the highest response rates. Let’s say that management decides to mail only to groups where the response rate is more than 3.5%. The offers would be directed to males who make more than $30,000 a year and females over age 40. A definite advantage of classification trees over other techniques is their ability to explain the results. We can often develop complex logistic models for scoring and build a tree to explain the results to the marketers. Although the outcome is never identical, the tree does a good job of uncovering key drivers in the market. Due to their broad applicability, classification trees will continue to be a valuable tool for all types of target modeling.
Operational databases are organized around business application; they are application oriented. Recall the five queries that the directors have identified as examples of the types of questions they would like to ask of their data. We concluded that they are concerned with sales of products over time. The subject area in our case study is clearly “sales.”

Nonvolatile means that the data, once placed in the warehouse, is not usually subject to change. Anyone who is using the database has confidence that a query will always produce the same result no matter how often it is run. Operational databases are extremely volatile in that they are constantly changing. A query is unlikely to produce the same result twice if it is accessing tables which are frequently updated.

Integrated means the data is consistent. For instance, dates are always stored in the same format. Integration is a problem for most organizations, particularly where there are many different types of technology in use. Even more subtle differences occur within different applications within the same technology. This occurs where, for instance, one application designer decides to hold customer addresses as five columns of 35 characters each, whereas another might use a Varchar(100) format. Before data is allowed to enter the data warehouse, it must be integrated. So integration is a process through which the data passes after it leaves the application database and before it enters the warehouse database.

Time variant means that historical data is recorded. Almost all queries executed against a data warehouse have some element of time associated within them. We have already established that most operational systems do not retain historical information. It is almost impossible to predict what will happen in the future without observing what happened in the past. A data warehouse helps to address this fundamental issue by adding a historical dimension to the data taken from the operational databases.

Inventory control programs are one component of a manufacturing MIS that relies on the production schedule. Inventory control programs can forecast future production, automatically reorder items when a certain threshold is met, determine manufacturing costs, and develop resource requirements plans from the production schedule.

Manufacturing Requirements Planning (MRP) programs help coordinate thousands of inventory items when demand for one item depends on demand for another. MRP systems determine when finished products are needed, then work backward to determine deadlines and resources needed to complete the final product on schedule.

When high inventory levels are kept, a company’s money is tied up in unused inventory. This means higher costs for the company. A Just-in-time (JIT) inventory approach ensures inventory and materials are delivered only when they are needed. This maintains inventories at their lowest possible level, but insures materials are on-hand in time for production. Although JIT is beneficial, it also makes a business vulnerable to supply chain disruptions – whether internal or external. For example, if a machine breaks down that makes a component another unit needs to assemble the product, assembly may need to stop due to lack on components.

Technologies have been developed to control and streamline the manufacturing process. Computers can directly control manufacturing equipment using computer-assisted manufacturing software. Computer-integrated manufacturing software connects all aspects of production together, including order processing, product design, manufacturing, quality control, and shipping. For example, after an engineer designs a product using CAD software, MRP systems can use information from the design as input to plan and order materials. Production scheduling systems can use the design specifications as an input into the scheduling process. And computer-aided manufacturing systems can use the design specifications as input for setup. This greatly improves manufacturing efficiency.

A flexible manufacturing system allows a facility to quickly and efficiently change from making one product to making another, often using robotics and other automation. Generally the changeover is computer-controlled.

Finally, quality control has become paramount for manufacturing firms. Control charts or sample testing is used to monitor product quality.

The manufacturing MIS subsystems and outputs monitor and control the flow of materials, products, and services through the organization.

What is a balanced scorecard? A balanced scorecard provides a means for linking the strategies of the different business areas within a corporation to the overall corporate vision. The term and methodology was introduced by David Norton and Harvard Business School professor Robert Kaplan back in 1992. They had found that the typical financial reports most companies were churning out did not provide management with enough information to run their companies. Instead of just reporting of the account numbers in the general ledger, Norton and Kaplan suggested that management focus on the key performance indicators, whether financial figures or statistical figures, that really drive their business.

How to make Balanced Scorecard (BSC) a strategic tool? In recent years, the balanced scorecard methodology has become a well accepted school of thought. A number of well-known management consulting companies offer implementation services, and software vendors are improving their applications to handle balanced scorecard reporting. Even very successful organizations could probably be more profitable by utilizing the same resources as they have today by developing a set of key performance indicators and a continuous follow-up process. Examples of such indicators could be:

• Average revenue per employee

• Customer satisfaction (e.g., as a number on a scale from 1 to 5)

• On time delivery

Most modern BI systems now have the capability to allow for loading or entering all the data needed to create a balanced scorecard and they have the report-writing features (for advanced calculations), as well as the analytical functionality (such as drill-down and graphics) needed. As balanced scorecards are being offered by BI software vendors, large organizations with applications from multiple vendors in use around the world have found it necessary to integrate their scorecards. The idea behind the balanced scorecard is to address the issues and to give decision makers a performance measurement and planning tool that is easy to understand and focused, and that can help the company link its strategic plan with key performance indicators.

Why use balanced scorecards in the reporting and analysis process? The way we do business is changing. It used to be simpler to keep track of the performance of a business and to create future plans. However, as key business conditions are changing, performance measurement, reporting, and analysis also need to change. The idea of the balanced scorecard is to focus in on the financial and statistical measurement that really drives the company and not waste time and money on planning and reporting for every possible line item in every corner of the business. The balanced scorecard approach also encourages management to include general industry comparisons as well as competitive comparisons in the planning and reporting.

Another key focus in the balanced scorecard approach is to link employee compensation to the performance metrics. This increases the focus and effort spent on achieving the targets set forth in the balanced scorecard. And because the reports focus on the key performance indicators, it is easy to follow where the company is going every period when actual figures are measured against budgets and forecasts.
